MAP Project UPDATE: Bot Attacks, Tea Time, Need More Participants!

*** MAP PROJECT UPDATE: MARCH 31, 2023***

Deepest gratitude to the community for sharing, completing, and engaging in the “Mapping the Lifecourse of Adoption: Health, Well-Being & Adoptee Connections in Adulthood” project!

In our commitment to community engaged knowledge creation, we are providing this update.

DELAYS IN COMPENSATION - BOT ATTACKS AND FRAUDULENT RESPONDERS

The survey has been severely encumbered by robot attacks resulting in 1,000s of "completed" surveys each week. In addition, we have been able to identify individuals who are not adopted seeking to complete the survey for the sole purpose of obtaining compensation. This has severely hindered our ability to send out compensation as we have to weed through who are legitimate responders.

In order to identify true responses, we are sending some responders a Google form asking you to verify some information before compensation is sent. If you completed the survey and have not received compensation, you may email us at info@caare-research.org and let us know. Please include the email address you used to request compensation so we can verify you and send the compensation.

If you are an adoptee who has not completed the survey yet and sincerely want to, please email me at hamcginnis@vcu.edu for a private link to the survey to complete. This will help expedite compensation as we can verify you are an adoptee and not a robot!

PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR SURVEY

If you started the survey and emailed yourself a CODE and LINK generated when you started the survey, then you can come back and complete the survey at a different time. Reminder for those who made the effort to start the survey, please finish!

CAN YOU MAKE PERSONAL ASKS TO YOUR ADOPTEE FRIENDS?

Would you be willing to ask 1 or more of your adoptee friends to complete the survey? This "snowball sampling" is the most effective way to ensure we get real people to respond to the survey. Please email me at hamcginnis@vcu.edu for a private link to the survey to send with your personal note encouraging your adoptee friends to do the survey, and be sure to follow up with your friends to see they have completed it!

NEED MORE PARTICIPANTS - BE COUNTED!

In order to do any statistical analyses we need a minimum of 150 and ideally 200 participants within a category. We are sharing some of the demographics of the 337 adoptees who completed the survey to date, and as you see, within categories and subcategories we are below 150 that ideal number.

So, if you are an adoptee from Colombia or China, a domestic or fostercare adoptee, for example, please activate your community and get them to complete the survey so we are able to have enough to run statistical analyses about your experiences with confidence!

WHO OUGHT WE BE INVITING AND CONNECTING WITH?

We are realizing that we are relying on our own social networks to reach out to groups and organizations. This might make this entire project feel insular and some groups/ organizations who are not getting personal invitations to participate may be feeling left out. Who else do we need to be inviting to join this project (and of course they can decline!) so that we are building up our community and not fracturing it? Email us at info@caare-research.org with your ideas and suggestions!

THANK YOU & GRATITUDES

KAAN Community Conversations with Glenn Morey & Hollee McGinnis - March 22, 2023, 8pm ET

Thanks to Katie Bozak and KAAN for hosting another MAP information session as part of their Community Conversations facilitated by Glenn Morey, creator of the documentary film project  Side X Side, in March.

I am deeply grateful to all of you and all of the work you may already be doing for adoptees in community, for championing this particular project, and for being part of the emergent process of this work.

In solidarity and hope,

Hollee and the MAP team
